Bus lanes, smart signals coming to South Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Every day, Murfreesboro Pike serves as a thoroughfare for thousands on Nashville roadways. Now, new additions are underway to help speed up the flow of WeGo buses.

According to WeGo data, buses have some of their lowest on-time performance at Thompson Lane, specifically. Officials are hoping to use bus only lanes, along with smart signals, to help alleviate the problem.

“Murfreesboro Pike is our busiest route. The 55 is our busiest route on the system,” said Eric Melcher, public information officer for WeGo Public Transit. “It gets very busy during rush hour, so the problem that we’re running into is that the buses to close together, so one bus will come and another bus will come a minute later rather than when it’s supposed to come 10 minutes later.”

Over the next several months, WeGo — in partnership with the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure — will work to add bus lanes and smart signals to the Murfreesboro Pike and Thompson Lane intersection. Similar technology is already in place at Murfreesboro Pike and Edge O Lake Drive.

“What we’re doing right now is lanes that we can maybe expand off the curb and to be able to make things a little bit easier for people that way, but it’s not taking away any traffic lanes right now,” Melcher explained.

The smart signals will detect how far buses are from one another and work to keep them more evenly spaced. WeGo drivers will also be notified if they should wait at a stop for a few minutes before continuing.

One note — the goal isn’t to help buses reach stops at specific times, but rather to keep them flowing in eight- to 10-minute intervals.

WeGo officials pointed out this is just one way they’re testing new technology around the city through partnerships with NDOT and Vanderbilt.

“Eventually, everything we learn from all these smaller projects will be used so that the ‘Choose How You Move’ team can develop the all-access corridors, which will be kind of the end product when we get to that,” Melcher told News 2.

Bus lanes at the intersection of Thompson Lane and Murfreesboro Pike are expected to be complete by the end of July.
