Charges filed against second suspect in armed casino robbery

Charges have been filed against a second person in connection with the armed robbery of the casino in Boonville.

Prosecutors charged Hollis Vanleer with First Degree Robbery, Armed Criminal Action, and First Degree Assault.

Vanleer is accused of working with Benjamin Michael-Dass Charles during the armed robbery of the Isle of Capri Casino on Wednesday.

They are accused of entering the casino, armed and dressed in black.

They ran to the cashier cage, jumped over the counter, and went into the main bank area.

There, they stole $1,276,000 in cash.

As they tried to run out, a casino patron tackled Charles.

While they were scuffling, Vanleer punched the patron in the head and face several times, stopping the fight and allowing them to escape.

Law enforcement found the 1998 Ford Taurus they used to escape on Howard County Road 344.

They found a receipt in the car that led them to Charles.

They also found seven homemade explosive devices.

On Thursday at 7 p.m., they detained Charles, who had shown up for his shift at the casino.

Charles was being held in the Cooper County Jail on a $1,300,000 bond.

Prosecutors charged Benjamin Michael-Dass Charles, 21, with First Degree Robbery, Armed Criminal Action, and Tampering with Physical Evidence in Felony Prosecution.

Court records do not yet indicate if Vanleer was in custody.
