Deputy credited with helping Marine in Chocowinity

A Beaufort County sheriff’s deputy is being credited with helping an active-duty Marine experiencing a mental health crisis earlier this month.
Lt. Waters was patrolling near U.S. 17 Business in Chocowinity around 4:30 p.m. on March 12 when he responded to a BOLO alert for a Marine that was reportedly experiencing suicidal thoughts, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities said Waters located a vehicle matching the description at a gas station and made contact with the individual.
Waters observed the Marine had sustained multiple self-inflicted lacerations when he approached them. Emergency services was requested, Waters secured the knife used in the incident and stayed with the individual, supporting them until first responders arrived.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said Waters’ actions helped ensure the individual received medical care.
