Kansas City couple turns engagement party into surprise wedding
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City couple surprised their family by turning their engagement party into their wedding.
Grace Gillaspie and Cameron Plas had their first date on March 19, 2025, after meeting through a dating app. They had an instant connection.
“We actually went on our first and second date on the same day,” said Gillaspie.
Later that year, they got engaged on a picture-perfect boat cruise at sunset.
“He actually thought that I was joking at first,” said Gillaspie.

From there, it was all things wedding planning. From the start, Grace and Cameron knew that they wanted to do something non-traditional. That’s when the idea for a surprise wedding came up.
“It seemed like something fun to do and to surprise everybody,” said Gillaspie.
They planned an ‘engagement party,’ only telling Grace’s daughters what was really happening.
“They liked being in on the secret, and they got to pick out their dresses,” said Gillaspie. “And we all tried on our dresses multiple times before the day because they were so excited.”
When the day of saying “I do” finally rolled around, Grace and Cameron had it all planned out.

“She said, ‘Let’s get married now, what do you think, Cameron?’, and I said okay,” said Plas.
Plas says that out of all of the guests, his grandma had the best reaction.
“She said, you little stinker,” said Plas.
Cameron and Grace made it official on March 20, 2026, which is one day and one year after they met.
“We’re looking forward to annoying our kids with ‘Cameron and I met on March 19th and got married on March 20th’,” said Gillaspie.
