Kindergarten student, woman and gunman die in Birdville ISD parking lot shooting
Two victims, including a kindergarten student, and the suspect died after a shooting in a parking lot on Birdville Independent School District property on Friday afternoon, Haltom City police said.
Officers and medics responded to the shooting - a suspected double homicide and suicide - about 4:30 p.m. in the 6200 block of Broadway Avenue. Two female victims were found inside a car, and the suspected shooter was found outside the vehicle, police said.
One victim died at a hospital and the other victim died at the scene. Medics also treated the gunman, but he died a short time later, police said.
Police spokesperson Rick Alexander said the preliminary investigation found that the man drove up and shot into the victims’ car, killing the woman and child. Shortly afterward, the suspect is believed to have taken his own life, Alexander said.
Investigators believe the shooting was the result of a family dispute, but the specific relationship between the victims and the shooter is under investigation. The victims and the suspect have not been publicly named, but school officials said the girl was a kindergarten student at Cheney Hills Elementary School.
Several police and fire vehicles blocked off an area marked with crime-scene tape surrounding a car and a U-Haul truck in the parking lot, off East Belknap Street, between a Birdville ISD administration building and the athletics department’s Birdville Stadium/W.G. Thomas Coliseum.
Although the shooting was on school district property, investigators said they don’t have reason to believe it was connected to Birdville ISD.
The suspect is believed to have driven the U-Haul vehicle to the parking lot, police said.

Child killed was Birdville ISD kindergartner, officials say
The child victim of the Friday afternoon shooting was a kindergartener at Birdville ISD’s Cheney Hills Elementary School, district officials said in a message sent to parents.
“We are devastated by the loss of one of our students and heartbroken that this tragedy occurred in our community,” the statement reads. “The loss of a student is always difficult and filled with a variety of emotions. Our teachers and staff will work with our students and families as we navigate this emotional time together.”
District crisis counselors will be on campus Monday to support students and staff members, officials said.
Haltom City police confirmed the incident was isolated and not related to the school district, according to the school district’s statement.
