SC Department of Revenue announces tax filing deadline extension

This week, taxpayers learned there's a new deadline to get South Carolina tax filings in. You can still file by the original deadline, but now there's an extension.

"Its messy I guess, because people got to make decisions if they want to go and file or do they want to go and do an extension," Tax Filer at April Tax Tom Waring said.

That’s Tom Waring from Columbia's April Tax talking about this week’s announcement that South Carolina's tax filing deadline has been extended to October 15. That announcment coming just three weeks before the original April 15 deadline.

"We've already filed half of our clients for the year so if they decide to conform, the state of South Carolina decides to conform, then we have to go back and amend all those terms," Waring said.

It comes as House lawmakers recently voted for Bill 3368, which is now in the Senate. It would allow the state to get in line with the Internal Revenue Service code, including the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

"No tax on overtime pay, no tax on tips, increase in the standard deduction, and a new senior deduction," Rep. Stephen Long said.

With the original deadline set for April, many South Carolinians have already filed their taxes. Long says people who have already filed can go back and refile for the benefits.

"People that have already filed would be able to go back and get into their filing to take advantage of the deductions, and this should be a tax cut for everyone in South Carolina that are filing right now," Long said.

The extension does not apply to payments people owe, and penalties will be charged if you don’t pay at least 90% of your 2025 tax liability by April 15.
