USPS proposes price increases to cover rising transportation costs: Which 4 services would be affected?

(NEXSTAR) – The United States Postal Service is seeking permission from a regulatory agency to temporarily hike prices on several of its services to cover the rising “costs of transportation.”

USPS called the proposed increase a “time-limited price change,” but explained that the adjustment could serve as a “necessary bridge to a permanent mechanism” for funding USPS services in the future, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

A representative for USPS was not immediately available to comment on what that mechanism could look like.

“The time-limited price change is consistent with industry practices and will support the Postal Service’s ability to continue achieving its public service mission — providing a nationwide, integrated network for the delivery of mail and packages at least six days a week — in a cost-effective and financially sustainable manner over the long term, just as the U.S. Congress has intended,” reads the release.

USPS specifically proposed an 8% increase on four services: Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select.

“No other products or services would be affected, including First-Class Stamps,” USPS wrote.

The increase, if approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC), would go into effect on April 26, 2026, and remain in place through January 17, 2027.

The notice comes as Postmaster General David Steiner has warned Congress that the Postal Service, which has seen letter volumes plummet, will run out of cash within a year unless lawmakers lift a decades-old cap and allow the independent agency to borrow more money. Steiner favors other reforms as well, including the authority to raise postage prices high enough to cover losses.
