Iowa Army Ammunition Plant to reopen on March 30

The Iowa Army Ammunition Plant will reopen on March 30.
The pause was initiated on Thursday, March 12. According to a March 19 press release, the IAAAP had lead azide on site that required safe disposal. Lead azide is a chemical compound used in munitions production. The IAAAP packs medium and large-caliber ammunition for the Department of Defense, its website reads.
Employees of the IAAAP will return to production lines after all the required safety protocols have been implemented, Army officials said.
“The safety of our personnel, the surrounding community, and the environment has been our absolute top priority throughout this process,” Lt. Col. Daniel V. Nosse, commander of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant said in a statement. “We are grateful for the patience of our skilled workforce and the community. We are confident in our safety protocols and are ready to get back to work.”
Community members will be notified when disposal of the lead azide is planned.
