Texas gas prices up more than $1 a gallon in a month, AAA says amid Iran war impact
Drivers in Amarillo are feeling the sting of rising gas prices, with some saying the jump is putting a strain on their budgets, while others say they are adjusting their routines.
AAA reported the statewide average price for regular gas in Texas is $3.62. Daniel Armbruster, AAA’s senior public affairs specialist, said the average has climbed sharply in recent weeks.
“A week ago was $3.48, and a month ago was $2.59. The price, for the statewide average in Texas, has increased by more than a dollar a gallon,” Armbruster said.
Part of the spike is tied to the war in Iran.
Travelers stopping in Amarillo to fill up said the higher prices are making long trips more difficult. Justin Peck, a driver traveling across several states, said the increase adds up quickly when fueling with diesel.
“Now, like I put diesel in all the time. You know, I was traveling from Indiana to Las Vegas, out to Arizona, New Mexico, now, here in Texas, we're going to Kansas tomorrow. So it's, it's tough when every time you, you know, you put a gallon of diesel in, it's a dollar and a quarter, and fifty more definitely makes traveling a little harder,” Peck said.
Kristina Orozco said she has started paying closer attention to prices as they rise.
“It's crazy. I never paid attention to gas prices before. Because it's a necessity. You just need to get places. But it's just so crazy just seeing the gas prices throughout the country,” Orozco said.
Some local drivers said they are not too concerned about current prices. Coy Armer said he would like to see prices lower, but is taking it in stride.
“Oh, not too bad. They could be a little bit lower, but I can't complain too much about it. If you got to have it, you got to have it,” Armer said.
Robert Raef said he expects prices to drop.
“I think they're fine for right now. They'll come down,” Raef said.
As prices continue to increase, AAA recommends drivers look for ways to stretch their fuel budgets. Armbruster suggested comparing prices between stations and avoiding aggressive driving.
“Compare prices between stations, but also avoid aggressive driving. That burns more fuel. Those quick accelerations you can lose between 15 to 30% of your fuel efficiency on the highway,” Armbruster said.
